Stress Test (Exercise or Pharmacologic)
A stress test, also known as an exercise stress test or treadmill test, is a medical test used to evaluate the heart’s function and blood flow during physical activity.
It helps diagnose and assess:
1. Coronary artery disease (CAD)
2. Cardiac arrhythmias
3. Cardiac function and performance
4. Exercise-induced chest pain or shortness of breath
Types of Stress Tests:
1. Exercise Stress Test: You’ll walk on a treadmill or pedal a stationary bike while your heart rate, blood pressure, and ECG are monitored.
2. Pharmacologic Stress Test: If you’re unable to exercise, medication (e.g., dobutamine or adenosine) is used to simulate exercise and stress the heart.
Procedure:
1. Preparation: Avoid heavy meals, caffeine, and certain medications before the test.
2. Monitoring: ECG, blood pressure, and heart rate are monitored throughout the test.
3. Exercise: You’ll start with light exercise and gradually increase intensity.
4. Symptoms: Report any chest pain, shortness of breath, or fatigue.
5. Recovery: Your heart rate and blood pressure are monitored after exercise.
Results:
– Normal: No significant changes in ECG, blood pressure, or symptoms.
– Abnormal: Changes in ECG, blood pressure, or symptoms indicating potential heart problems.
