Root Canal
A root canal is a dental procedure to remove infected or damaged tissue from inside a tooth. This tissue, called pulp, contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. When the pulp becomes infected or damaged, it can cause pain, swelling, and abscesses.
During a root canal, the dentist or endodontist:
1. Removes the infected or damaged pulp
2. Cleans and shapes the inside of the root canal
3. Fills the canal with a special material to seal it
4. Seals the tooth with a filling or crown to protect it
Root canals are often necessary to:
– Relieve toothache pain
– Prevent infection spread
– Save a damaged tooth from extraction
– Restore chewing and biting function
